Covering the whole altar wall of the Sistine Chapel is The Last Judgment, Michelangelo’s masterpiece depicting the second coming of Christ.
On the altar in front of the fresco is a crucifix. Christ hangs emaciated and dead – an intense reminder of the suffering he endured for our sins.
But right above the crucifix, Christ shines in his resurrected glory – a powerful reminder of the fact that life overcomes death. Even though death might feel like the ultimate reality sometimes, our hope in Christ is that eternal life is right around the corner, while death is merely a temporary enemy who will soon be defeated. Check out this clip from The Chosen which shows the moment Jesus raises Lazarus from the grave.
Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” –John 11:25-26
